Do You Know The Ingredients in Vape Juice?
Many vapers like to understand what they’re consuming, the chemicals going into their bodies, and the effects. However, for those who are unfamiliar with them, there are four common vape ingredients:
Propylene Glycol (PG)
Vegetable Glycerine (VG)
Nicotine
Flavoring
If you prefer a nicotine-free vape, then you’ll only be consuming three e-liquid ingredients.
Every brand uses a different balance of these four chemicals, resulting in varying experiences across throat hit, nicotine strength, cloud size, and e-liquid thickness.
Anyway, let’s dive into these four e-liquid ingredients, and discover what they are and why they’re needed.
Vape Juice Ingredients 1 of 4: Propylene Glycol (PG)
This clear, odorless liquid has a slightly sweet taste and syrup-like texture. Not to be confused with the harmful Ethylene Glycol, this diluent is used in a variety of industries, including food, beauty, and pets. Furthermore, propylene glycol is FDA-approved and considered not to be cancerous.
Why Is PG Needed In E-Liquid Ingredients?
Essentially, PG is used in vape juice ingredients to be a vehicle for flavoring. Firstly, it dilutes the e-liquid, enabling it to flow freely through the tank, in turn allowing the flavor to be preserved and released.
Additionally, e-liquids with high PG content are recognized as giving a harsh throat hit, resembling that of tobacco smoke. So, if intense flavors and throat hits are your thing, you should be looking for vape juice with high PG content.
One thing to be wary of is a potential reaction to PG. Some people experience sore throat and skin irritation from higher doses of PG, so we recommend up your intake gradually.
Ingredients In Vape Juice 3 of 4: Vegetable Glycerine (VG)
The second of two diluents you’ll find in vape juice ingredients. Again, this is clear, odorless, and slightly sweet to taste, but it thickens vape juice rather than letting it flow freely. Traditionally used in healthcare products, VC is recognized as safe by the FDA. However, the impact of inhaling it is currently unknown.
Why Is VG Needed in E-Liquid Ingredients?
VG is the cloud controller of the ingredients in vape juice. Due to its viscosity, VG affects the amount of vapor created, meaning the higher the VG content, the larger and thicker the clouds will be.
For those of you looking to avoid harsh throat hits, VG is known to be smooth and soft, making the nicotine high less like a tobacco smoking experience.
There are a couple of downsides to VG. As it is thick and gloopy, it can make it difficult to clean your vape pen. Furthermore, as it doesn’t pass through the tank so easily, it takes longer for the cotton in the vape coil to be saturated, and it’s harder for the coil to wick, often causing dry hits.
Vape Ingredients 3 of 4: Flavorings
There are hundreds, if not thousands of different flavorings available for vaping, so it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what every brand will use. More often than not, a combination of food-grade natural and artificial flavorings is used.
Why Are Flavorings Needed In E-Liquid Ingredients?
Quite simply, flavorings are needed in vape juice to make it taste good and for you to personalize your experience. The taste and smell of tobacco aren’t for everyone. In fact, most people deem it off-putting and unhygienic. However, the taste and aroma of fresh fruits, spices, sweet treats, and other pleasantries make vape juice more appealing.
Vape Juice Ingredients 4 of 4: Nicotine
Nicotine is the main reason people smoke and the cause of cigarettes being so hard to quit. This highly addictive substance is known to be a stimulant and relaxant, depending on how you personally react to it.
Often, people wrongly assume nicotine is the cigarette ingredient that causes cancer – it’s not. Tar and other cigarette additives are actually carcinogenic.
Why Is Nicotine Needed In E-Liquid Ingredients?
Nicotine isn’t needed in e-liquids – you can purchase nicotine-free vape juice. However, as e-liquids are used by many looking to cut back or stop smoking, nicotine is a crucial ingredient. You’ll often find dosages of 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, and 12mg, with a higher dosage offering a harsher throat hit.
A relatively new addition to the industry is NIC salts. Compared to regular nicotine, they enable vapers to take a higher dosage without the harshness. You’ll regularly find them in 25mg – 50mg strengths.
